Translate #11

No intro for this blog post... wish i had a freebie.....

#1: Translation 1 places emphasis on the imagery of the uneasy dream that Samsa had. The use of the word giant also adds emphasis to this imagery. In the translation it says "to find himself" which suggest that Samsa was unaware of this change in physical appearance. The arrangement of the sentence in my opinion draws my attention directly to the dream.

#2: Translation 2 is not nearly as effective in putting emphasis in the physical transformation of Samsa. "He found he had been transformed in his bed into an enormous bug." The first half of this sentence is ridiculous. Where else would he had been while dreaming? You normally dream IN YOUR BED. DUH. However, this translation use s the word enormous instead of giant. This decision could mean that the physical change was much more drastic than translation 1 would like to offer. The structure was more in the form of a build up, BOOM then a falling action kind of way.

#3: This translation sounds like a nerd wrote it.  Yeah this guy. "Insect". What makes this translation different is that it was the only one that used the word "awoke" and not awakening or, woke up, etc... The word transformed adds more on the physical change. Saying "changed" or "turned into" does not add the same effect as using transformed.

#4: The comma after the words one morning lets the reader know immediately that the dream happened in the morning. The other translations leave room of to wonder temporarily whether or not Samsa awoken in the morning or not. This translation equally adds emphasis to the fact that Samsa found himself in his own bed. Again not understanding why but it could be a way to add to the climax of finding out that he's a big a** bug.

The comparison to the original is that one it's in English and two the sentence is structured differently. In my attempt to freestyle this translation, I'm pretty sure it says something about how he woke up one morning from a bad dream (comma) and was a huge bug. Boom.........

The word choice affects the meaning in each translation because some are more descriptive than others. Translation 1 (and not because it was the first one i read) was most effective in creating imagery with the word choice. Translation one also didn't use a coma in the sentence as commas are used for a pause. Not using a comma speeds up the sentence and the reader ultimately reads it faster without a comma. Using a comma puts more emphasis some parts of the sentence that should stand out more.

  1. I also agree that translation 1 is the most effective based on that it was the closest to the original text and the word choice was the most effective. I like how you talked about the use of coma in sentence so looking at the sentence structure. I feel like you could on analysis the sentence a little more but overall it was good and i like where you stated that certain sentence were not effective because of word choice and etc.
