Netflix & kill? #7

Kinda don't have a Netflix so I've been borrowing my friend's. She a real one. But, I'll be looking into Lady M's Netflix top favs so here goes nothing or something...

1. Dear White People (lol this one is great)
Dear White People was created as a movie and turned into a show on Netflix. The show takes a shots at ya know people who aren't of color at a pretty much rich white university on their school radio. Throughout the show it speaks on a lot of issues of racial injustice at that specific university, other like it and across the country. This show relates to Lady M because the main character is a woman and she is unafraid to take a jab at people's pride and especially not the men within the show. She is fearless on the outside but does have a few inner fears but doesn't want to show them. I believe this is also another similarity between the main character and Lady M. 

2. She's Gotta Have It (a spike lee joint : ))
She's Gotta Have It is another great one to look at. The main character is an ambitious and talented artist trying to maintain her art life along with her social life. She just so happens to be involved with 3 guys but that's totally OKAY. Do you boo, do you. Throughout the show she talks about gender issues, what should be accepted by men and what should be rejected. The reason this one might be on Lady M's flix list is because the main character shows how she is in control of all 3 men. They ALL do things on her time and that's an example of a powerful woman. Lady M models similar behavior because Macbeth does what Lady M asks in the time she asks of it. WE ALL KNOW who's really running the show. With the main character being an artist it could relate to Lady M because she has her on ambitions but I don't believe she used Macbeth to fulfill them. 

3. The Girl King 
The Girl King is about how her father was killed and she became the king. All throughout the movie she has issues within her self and it translates outwardly in her reign. This relates to Lady M because that guilt that she holds within her translates into her actions while she's sleep walking. This trait could reveal how Lady M really feels because she won't actually speak about it openly.  In the movie the main character wont actually speak on these issues openly either. It also touches on a woman being a queen in the male position and that's also translated in Macbeth when Lady M becomes the queen. 

4. Deidra & Laney Rob a Train
Deidra and Laney has to be my favorite Netflix movie. Deidra influences Laney into robbing trains for money after her mom ends up in jail. She uses the money to take care of bills, taking care of her siblings, putting money aside for college and getting her mom out of jail. Deidra and Lady M are similar because they are good at influencing others to act on certain things. They also commit two different crimes within both texts. Stealing is although much different from murder but it is still a crime. This movie could reveal how she's willing to push the limits to get what she believes needs to be accomplished while influencing people to act on this belief with her.

    I am actually super amused with your selection. They aren't the first tv shows that one would assume of when thinking of Lady M. I think Dear White People is actually a really good option and I hadn't thought about it until you made the connections that you did. As for the others, I may have to watch them myself and be a judge of that.. :)

    Out of those four, I am most familiar with Dear White People (this is actually a really funny show). I enjoyed reading this blog post and I just wanted to add that the motif of apperance vs. reality is present in the show Dear White People. For example the main character who runs the radio station is being looked as an activitst for people of color but when she is found out to be dating a white man she gets alot of hate and people begin to question whether she truly believes the things she saws.

The focal point of this piece is the 3 kings that visit a damaged building to give their respect to Jesus Christ after he was born. In the borders around this scene, people (Magi) are kneeling before Herod who seems to be the king at this time. The horses in the upper left could represent them leaving the area or the journey taken to get to this area. I believe that the kneeling before Herod could have a negative connotation or a positive one but both can be seen in this piece. The background and foreground of this piece seems to contrast each other. https://www.ted.com/talks/gus_casely_hayford_the_powerful_stories_that_shaped_africa (This was funny, my bad) Anyway,Gus Hayford created a ted talk about how story telling shaped Africa. His argument was that story telling was essential to African culture because due to the enslavement and oppression that Africa experienced. Throughout the ted talk he shares different narratives that are all tied into Africa culture such as the discovery of architecture in Great Zimbabwe, the British attack on Ashanti and stories of the Mali empire. The speaker was able to get his point across because of the variety of stories used in the talk. All stories had a common theme and that was about the discovery or harm towards African culture. Hayford used ethos and logos more than the use of pathos. The narratives he decided to include were all well researched and detailed as well as being easy to follow.
